Bhubaneswar: A lawyer's alleged gang rape in Bhubaneswar led to violent protest by the city's lawyers on Tuesday.

Women lawyers in Bhubaneswar went literally on a rampage on the streets. Tyres were set on fire, vehicles damaged, roads blocked and when that was not enough to meet their demands, one of them even attempted self immolation.

The violence erupted after one of their colleagues was allegedly gang raped on Monday night in the Balipatna area.

"If this can happen to lawyers, you can imagine how safe is the common man here. The police here is simply useless,” lawyer Prasanta Sahoo angrily said.

The lawyers ended their protest only after the city police commissioner promised to arrest the accused within 24 hours, but it is a promise that could well be hard to keep.

In the past month, more than six rape incidents have occurred in Bhubaneswar. Even the new police commission system which was implemented in Bhuabneswar in January does not seem to bring down the crime graph in the city.

Commissioner Binay Kumar Behera, however, feels the police are doing the best they can, given their extremely limited numbers.

"We are highly understaffed, but we still see that such crimes does not occur. I assure you we will give justice to the victim," promised Behera.

Temple city Bhubaneswar is fast turning out into a crime capital while the police express their helplessness. On their part, the lawyers have threatened more violent protests if the alleged rapists are not brought to book at the earliest.
