Orissa MLAs hold mock Assembly session

Bhubaneswar: A mock Assembly session is being held in Orissa after the state Assembly was adjourned for two days.

The entire Opposition has refused to leave the House and is running a mock Assembly in protest against what they call an undemocratic adjournment.

Orissa Assembly has been adjourned sine die for past two days but state Opposition leader Bhupinder Singh is readying for another day at the Assembly.

But Monday's session was a mock one organised by an angry Opposition to protest the Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat's decision to adjourn the House sine die.

Opposition members have been camping in the House, afraid that they may be locked out if they go home.

Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress allege the government adjourned the House, to escape criticism over the multi-crore mining scam.

"The present government under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik has looted the rich mines of Orissa. Similarly the have also looted the democratic rights of the Opposition by undemocratically adjourning the House," says Singh.

The Assembly was scheduled to sit for 11 more days. But on Saturday, the Speaker adjourned the House saying there was no important business at hand.

The state government insists the Opposition had ample time to raise issues but contributed nothing more than uproar in the House.

"This mock Assembly is done to get cheap publicity by the Opposition. This is not the first time that the Assembly has been adjourned before schedule due to lack of business," says Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Pantaik.

Opposition members say they will continue to hold mock Assembly till December 19 when the Winter Session was originally scheduled to end.

Though the Opposition has met the Governor MC Bhandare over the issue and has requested him to intervene and resume the house, he is yet to take a decision on this.

However, constitutional experts say that the Governor has very little role in this issue.
