New Delhi: In Orissa, it is the quiet after the storm. Though the gun battles have stopped, the manhunt for Naxals is now into its 4th day.
Fresh combing operations have been launched on Wednesday, with six groups being sent deep into the jungles.
Police believe that many rebels may have escaped to Chhatisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. They also believe a big group of Naxals is still hiding along the Kandhamal-Ganjam border.
Security forces have not been able to find more bodies of Naxals whom they claim to have shot, even though sniffer dogs are being used.
Naxals are also believed to have taken shelter with the local villagers, using them as shields.
Police recovered more than half the arms – 3.3 rifles, ammunition and grenades – the Naxals had looted from the Nayagarh police armoury, in the jungles.
Casualties have been high on both sides, with cops shooting down more than 20 Naxals in the encounter since Sunday.
More than 1,500 security personnel including CRPF Greyhounds, Special Operation Group and Orissa special armed police are involved in the operation. Two Airforce helicopters are been used to trace their movements.
Meanwhile, the opposition in the state assembly has accused the Naveen Patnaik government of mishandling the Naxal issue.
"The government claims that they have killed 20 Naxals, but so far not a single body of a dead Naxal has been found. Even the looted arms seized are all the rotten lot left behind by the Naxals," insisted the opposition’s deputy leader, Narsingha Mishra.
