Bhubaneshwar / New Delhi: Medical examination confirming the rape of a nun on August 25 in the anti-Christian violence sparked off by the killing of Swami Laxmanananda has led to fresh criticism of the state.

Now, the state government has ordered an inquiry, the station-in-charge suspended, and four people have also been arrested. However, it does little to salvage the secular credentials of Chief Minster Naveen Patnaik.

“It’s a heinous crime. I will see that stringent action is taken against the perpetrators,” Patnaik said on Friday.

The wake up call for the Chief Minister could be the meeting in which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was embarrassed by the violence in Orissa.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Shivraj Patil has also sent a strong letter to Patnaik, asking him to make sure that the violence stops immediately.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said, “Situation is grave. The PM has directed the Home minister to give an appraisal note at the earliest. The Orissa government has to do more to control the situation.”

Though, the Government denies any move to impose President's Rule, the PM called for a special Cabinet meeting on Kandhamal.
