New Delhi: The oldest professionals in the world are now hawking their wares on the Internet's newest phenomenon – social networking websites like Orkut under flak for solicitation that may be going on.
CNN-IBN discovers that it's not all that crazy and far out and that the accusations may not be that fair.
Sex – it's always been up for sale but what has people worried is that the sellers can now be found on the new, hugely popular social networking websites like Orkut and Friendster.
They have put up photos, they have setup groups and they are attracting attention.
With nearly 50 million people using social networking websites every month –that's a lot of attention and it's expected says social networking website Techtribe.com CEO Rohit Agarwal.
“When the main websites came out the highest trafficked ones were the porn websites. Even with social networking 1 per cent will be doing things that we rather not see,” Agarwal says.
But it's there for all to see and it's everywhere with social networking websites occupying a tiny space in this big bad world. But no matter how blatant it gets most take care to stay on the right side of the law and there is little that can be done anyway.
Cyber Law Expert Vakul Sharma says, “It's impossible to stop, the Saudi government has spent billions of dollars in the last 10 years with limited results.”
Despite the size of the controversy the number of people actually soliciting still seems small especially when compared to the population that is taking advantage of the relative anonymity of the Internet to explore new opportunities that don't involve the exchange of money.
So everything is all right as long as parents protect their wards.
“If you look at any venture on the Internet it's mimicking what we do in real life,” Agarwal adds.
The story of human history is filled with chance meetings between strangers. That history continues to be written at places like Orkut.com.
But where human beings go they take with them all that's bad about human society. So why are we surprised?
