New Delhi: Former US president George W Bush said on Friday that he was sure al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was alive and hiding and that the United States would bring him to justice.

Replying to questions after addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Bush said he (Osama) was not on the television and did not have any ''victory parades.''

''I am sure he is alive. But he is not on TV, not leading any victory parades...he is hiding . Yeah, he will be brought to justice and he deserves to be,'' he said in reply to a question.

He said India and the United States should work together in Afghanistan to bring in peace and democracy there and free the people of that country from difficulties and poverty.

He appreciated India's contribution of $1.8 billion for reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan.

''The United States and India must continue to stand together to support democracy and peace in Afghanistan and continue its economic development.''

Describing Afghanistan a ''priority'' for establishment of peace and democracy in the region, the former US president rejected he idea of negotiating with extremists and said it was ''a long struggle'' in Afghanistan where the society had been completely suppressed by Taliban.

''It is a long way to go.''

He said the US had ''liberated'' 25 million people (by ousting Taliban) and it need not be ''abandoned'' now.
