Mumbai: Osians Connoisseurs of Art today launched its Publishing and Design House with Bachchanalia: the films and memorabilia of Amitabh Bachchan, in the presence of the mega star Aamir Khan at Tata Theatre in NCPA in Mumbai.
The publishing division will take forward research and knowledge-base building for the Indian and Asian fine and popular arts, cinema and architecture.
Bachchanalia: The Films and Memorabilia of Amitabh Bachchan, co-authored by Bhawana Somaaya and the Osians Centre for Archiving, Research & Development (CARD).
The book dedicated to the works of arguably one of the greatest personalities of Indian and world cinema is a collector’s item and a unique documentation of the mega stars filmography illustrated through rare and exclusive film posters and publicity material from the Osians Archive & Library Collection.
Bhawana Somaaya, co-author of the book is the recipient of several prestigious awards and has been a longstanding editor of the Indian film magazine Screen.
Amitabh: Now and Forever published in 2001 was the prelude of Somaaya's present book on mega star.
With the partnership of the Osians CARD as source of new imagery, narratives, archival knowledge, production and design values the book has been transformed into the first of its kind in Asia, if not the world, to depict a complete cinematic journey through the mesmeric publicity material stretching 40 years, from the days of hand painted posters to the present day of digitally doctored photographic montage.
An exclusive exhibition of vintage film memorabilia from the Osians Archive Collection which is the basis of Bachchanalia was on display at the launch.
The experience of being in such close proximity to some of the finest original film posters, lobby cards and photographs of Bachchan was nostalgic event for the legend himself.
The Osians Archive & Library research team led by Neville Tuli has put together this most comprehensive visual homage to the supreme energies of the actor by representing his aura through all the 150 odd films he has acted in, in the last forty years.
Aamir Khan who was the guest of honour felicitated Bachchan. Additional launches will take place at the Jaipur Literature Festival on January 23 followed by those in Delhi,Kolkota,Chennai and Bangalore.
International releases of the book in France,UK and US are also planned, Neville Tuli, Founder-Chairman, Osians said. He said, after publishing over fifty quality books, building the base, Osians now feels ready to launch a Publishing & Design House for the external world.
