Osteoporosis not just an old woman's disease

New Delhi: If you think Osteoporosis or the loss of bone density only hits people who are old, here’s some shocking news. Osteoporosis can hit you even at a young age.

Your body achieves its peak bone mass when you're in your 20s, and then it declines. But young girls who do not even achieve this peak are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis even in their 20s called Osteopenia.

“I see 50 patients a day. Twenty per cent of them are young women with aches and bone problems,” says Orthopaedic, Max Healthcare, Dr Rajiv Thukral.

When asked what makes the young women prone to it, Dr Thukral says, “It’s because women diet, there’s no calcium, intake of aerated drinks and no exercise.”

Too much exercise can be equally damaging as calcium is lost through sweating and the body also gets no time to rest and repair, too many cigarettes are also bad news, and osteoporosis can also run in the family.

There are no reliable statistics on how many young women have osteoporosis. Screening for the disease is not routine and is often not detected until fractures occur. But there are some warning signals you should look out for.

“Aches and pains in the bone and not the muscles. Not the joints are prone to fatigue,” says Dr Thukral.

When asked how can to prevent it, Thukral says, “Get into a habit of walking 20-25 minutes everyday. And eat a well balanced diet.”

The Recommended daily allowance for calcium in women in 20s and early 30s is 1,000 milligrams. Your daily calcium intake should include two glasses of milk a day, one bowl of dairy products, a cup of green vegetables and fruits

And just taking calcium supplements isn’t' good enough. Dr Thukral says, “Supplements can't substitute the real thing.”
