"I used a brick to kill my family," he says when asked what transpired.
Out of a job for the past many months, the police say, Verma - the sole breadwinner - allegedly went to the extent of brutally killing his children before injuring his wife and then attempting suicide.
Of Verma's five children, the eldest was just 12 and youngest a nine-month-old. Verma, a truck driver by profession, didn't even spare his wife Durga when she tried to stop him. He then tried to kill himself by slashing his wrists.
Both Ravinder and Durga now lie critical at the hospital.
IG Meerut Zone, Gurbachan Lal says, "There is a possibility that Ravinder may even have drugged his children first. It would have been difficult to kill everyone otherwise. We are still investigating the matter."
