New Delhi: The Border Security Force celebrated its 42nd raising day on Friday. However, all is not well with India's first line of defence. Over 7000 BSF members have quit the force in the last 2 years.
A year ago, Balwant Singh Yadav was a member of the Border Security Force. His uniform gave him respect and the prospect of a good life. Yet, Balwant Singh chose to give it all up and take up a job as a security officer in a Delhi real estate company. Although it was a very emotional and a tough decision he made, yet he had to take it for the sake of his family.
"I was deployed in Srinagar and I was unable to take care of my family and children, who were all based in the Capital. For the sake of my children and their career, I thought, it was best to quit the job,” says Balwant Singh Yadav, former, BSF personnel.
However, Balwant is one among the 7000 members who have chosen to quit the BSF. The trend is popular, not only among jawans, but also senior officials. For instance, Vibhunarayan, Deputy Commandant, the second most important man in a thousand-strong fighting force also gave up his job in BSF for almost the same reasons.
"I was missing my family. I was missing my children. I wanted to see them grow up,” says Vibhunarayan.
The BSF is however, not ignorant of the problems and issues faced by faced by its employees.
"We are doing whatever we can to solve the problem. We have an educational institution, schools and technical institutes so that the children of our families could have regular technical education. We are also trying to have more family accommodation,” says AK Mitra, Director General, BSF
Despite all efforts, the BSF will not disagree to the fact that their measures are not working for many of their employees. In a job that keeps them away from their families 9 months a year, more and more BSF personnel are taking up opportunities coming their way from the corporate sector.
