New Delhi: The Capital on Friday was reeling under heavy rainfall that continued through the day.
Most parts of the city were under water with traffic jams reported in several areas. The worst affected areas were Rajghat, ITO, Wazirabad, Kalindi Kunj and Badarpur.
People living in high-rise buildings in Gurgaon, too, had their share of trouble like a resident of the suburban city who said, “My scooter has given away. I had to drag it for three kilometers before I found even ground.”
In places like ITO, commuters had to wait for two-three hours for the jam to clear out.
Suction pumps, tow away vehicles and wading traffic policemen – nothing made life easy with even Chief Minister Sheila Dixit having a tough time on Friday. “Even I am suffering due to waterlogging. You must go and ask MCD why this is happening,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) defended itself by saying that the worst affected areas were the ones under the Public Works Department and the state government wasn’t doing its job well.
“We should not make empty promises. She (CM) should try and improve the situation on the ground,” Chairman of the MCD Standing Committee Vijender Gupta argued.
MCD officials say a total of 625 suction pumps have been brought in to keep the situation under control. Citizens have also been advised to call on helpline number 1266 to register their complaints.
But who does one blame for waterlogging in the city with both the MCD and state government trying to pass the buck? Perhaps citizens can find solace in the assurances of the Met Department, which indicates that rainfall will subside in the coming days.
