New Delhi: The grilling of business tycoons in the 2G spectrum scam case by Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) continued on Tuesday. A day after Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata and corporate lobbyist Nira Radia had appeared before the PAC, it was the time for Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) Chairman Anil Ambani and DB Etisalat CEO Atul Jhamb to be questioned by the Bharatiya Janata Party MP Murli Manohar Joshi-led parliamentary panel.
Top telecom companies continue to depose before the Parliaments Public Accounts committee in connection with 2G spectrum allocation. Reliance communications Anil Ambani along with Etislat DB CEO were questioned by the panel on Tuesday - the former on why he sold his stake in Swan just before license was granted.
The panel seems to be satisfied with the answers given by Ambani. Sources say the panel could call the Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekar and PM's Principal Secretary T K A Nair as well.
PAC's grilling of corporates continued for a second consecutive day on Tuesday it was the turn of DB Etisalat's Vinod Goenka and Atul Jham, Unitech's Sanjay Chandra, Telenor's Charles Woodworth and the big man, Reliance Communications chairman Anil Dhirubai Ambani.
Ambani was quizzed for an hour on his company's links with Swan Telecom and on the dual technology issue.
Sources say PAC grilled him on both the CAG report and the CBI chargesheet. Members asked him why he sold of stake in Swan just before license was granted. He was also asked for his views on the first come first serve policy.
“He was candid mostly but at some places refused to answer as matter was subjudice or because he needed to consult relevant papers,” said Murli Manohar Joshi.
DB etisalat's Vinod Goenka allowed CEO Atul Jham and the company’s legal advisor to take questions on his behalf. Sources say Goenka was questioned on his company’s links with Cineyug and its owner Morani and why a loan of over Rs 200 crores was given to Kalignar TV via Cineyug.
Unitech and its Norwegian partner Telenor too was questioned on how they got the license inspite of being ineligible.
“Telenor was quite frank, answered everything,” said Joshi.
CBI is yet to name Kalignar TV in its chargesheet but sources say PAC is convinced that prima facie there is enough evidence to pin down DB etisalat on its loan to Kalignar. As for Anil Ambani, he has promised to send some more documents to PAC on Wednesday to convince the committee of his defence.
