Shimla: A whimsical move by the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has left its people puzzled.
Soon, the only two colours that would be seen on rooftops in Shimla would be red and olive green. The idea was suggested by a German non-government organisation to beautify the city and restore some of its pristine glory.
The SMC has set July 20 as the deadline for all roofs to be painted either of the two colours. That is probably why a delay in monsoons is good news for the locals.
"If the rooftops are painted before the monsoon, Shimla will look better and attract more tourists," a resident Jitender Chauhan said.
"Painting of houses was long overdue," Tourism Minister GS Bali said.
However, the orders have evoked mixed reactions from the locals.
"It may look good but we are retired and this is an unnecessary expense for us," resident, J H Helen said.
However, another resident, Kanta Devi, is quite happy with this new order. "It's a very good thing. It'll add to Shimla's beauty," she said.
The administration's also hoping for an increase in the number of tourists as it feels this move will make the city more attractive than before.
