New Delhi: An Indian auctioneer is set to put Rabindranath Tagore's paintings up for bids at an auction event named, 'Significant Indian Paintings' to be held in the capital later this month. The auction will put 69 paintings by some of the biggest Indian artists including Raja Ravi Varma, Rabindranath Tagore and an original letter from Francis Newton Souza, under the hammer. "We are trying to project unsung heroes of the modern art and bring them to the fore," said Maher Dadha, Chairman and MD, Bid & Hammer Auctioneers.

However, a new prohibition ensures that the works of art stay within the national borders. "These works have been labeled as national treasures due to which a lot of the paintings won't be exportable and we've clarified that to bidders." This clause forbidding buyers from taking these national art treasures out of the country has been added following the hue and cry over the London auction of 12 Tagore paintings by Sotheby's in June this year. Paintings by artists including Nicholas Roerich, Jamini Roy and Abanindranath Tagore would also come with the prohibitory non-exportable tag. The auctioneers say they do not mind even if that's a detriment to fetching higher prices for these works of art.

One of the highlights of the auction is the portraiture of a Maharaja Tanjore by Raja Ravi Varma, carrying a pre-bid price tag of Rs 1.5 crore and is quite unlike the master's style. Others, however, like a work of FN Souza Tribute to Rabindranath Tagore do not have that embargo on them. But prohibition or not, the auction, that will take place on November 30th, promises to grab eyeballs.
