New Delhi: On the eve of the first anniversary of the Mumbai attacks, Pakistan finally moved against the conspirators.
Lashkar-e-Toiba operations commander Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi who is described as the mastermind behind the attacks was chargesheeted along with six others including another Lashkar operative Zarar Shah.
The charges read out in the special anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi accused them of:
- Planning the Mumbai attacks
- Of training and arming the gunmen who carried out the attack
- Of providing logistical and related support to the gunmen
However, all seven pleaded not guilty. Nine others who are absconding have also been charged. They include Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor of the Mumbai attack who is under trial in India.
The filing of chargesheets come after months of official denials from Islamabad about the role of its nationals in the attacks and delays in the judicial process. Those chargesheeted face the death penalty if convicted but Delhi was not impressed.
“We renew our demand to Pakistan to take effective action to dismantle its terrorist structure which includes training camps, its financing and it includes all sorts of other provisions from which over the last 15-20 years our country has been repeatedly attacked,” Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said.
The chargesheets come a day after US President Barack Obama warned Islamabad about terrorism rooted in its soil. It also comes ahead of the Commonwealth Summit in Trinidad on Friday where Islamabad will come under the scanner for action taken against terrorism.
