Pak army begins anti-Taliban operations

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Pakistani army has begun operations against Taliban militants in the North West Frontier Province.

The operations come in the wake of reports that Taliban leader Beitullah Mehsud's militia is closing in on the provincial capital Peshawar.

The operations involving an unspecified number of troops - backed by tanks and helicopter gunships - are presently concentrated in the district of Tank, 320 km south of Peshawar.

However, the focus could soon shift to Dera Ismail Khan, Nowshera and the Swat Valley where Mehsud runs a parallel government.

Swat is less than 300 km from Islamabad.
