Pak chief justice crisis continues

New Delhi: Pakistan didn't see Karachi style weekend violence on Monday, but Lahore was not done with its protests.

Once again, thousands of lawyers, human rights activists and opposition workers were out on the streets chanting slogans against General Pervez Musharraf.

Elsewhere entire cities had come to a standstill - Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar - all responding to a strike call by the opposition.

"Our demand is that Musharraf should immediately be removed," said protesting lawyers.

While courts remained shut across Pakistan, Islamabad's Supreme Court was in the middle of some action of its own.

The proceedings against the suspended chief justice were temporarily suspended after a judge - Falak Sher - quit the original 14 member panel. He felt it was improper for him to hear Iftikhar Choudhary's case since he had previously challenged Choudhary's appointment.

Thirteen judges of the Supreme Court will now resume proceedings on Tuesday.

There was even a murder foul with one Supreme Court official being shot dead. The government claimed Additional Registrar Syed Hamid Raza was a victim of robbery, but his brother called it a targeted killing, while hinting at a conspiracy.
