Diana dumped me, claims Pak doc

London: "It was Diana who dumped me". That is what Pakistani surgeon, Dr Hasnat Khan claims nearly 11 years after the Princess's death.

Khan told the High Court on Tuesday that contrary to media speculation that attributed the break up to him, Diana had broken off with him after her first holiday with the Fayed family in August 1997.

Khan said this through a written statement read out to the court conducting an inquest into Diana's death in London.

The revelation contradicts a decade of reports saying he ended the two-year affair with the Princess leaving her heartbroken.

Khan declined to testify in person or via video link-up from Pakistan, where he currently lives.

In a written statement, believed to have been made to police in 2004, Khan said Diana had not been her "normal self" after her return from the holiday and he suspected she had met someone else.

"At a second meeting, she said it was all over between us, but she denied there was anyone else," he said.

Harrods departmental store owner Mohamed al-Fayed claimed his son Dodi, who was the Princess' lover, and Diana were killed by British security forces on the orders of Prince Philip.

Khan, however, said he thought Diana and Dodi's deaths were not the result of an establishment conspiracy. "I think it was just a terrible accident."

The surgeon claimed that he learnt of her relationship with Dodi in news reports but said he did not believe Diana was planning to marry him after such a short time.

Khan said he would be surprised if Diana was pregnant when she died as claimed by Fayed because "she was always careful about contraception".

Khan's relationship with the Princess began after her visits in 1995 to the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, where he worked. They discussed marriage but he had feared that media intrusion would make it "hell".

He wanted her to come to Pakistan but she refused. Many believe Khan's evidence may now be the turning point in Diana's death case.
