India building up war hysteria: Pak envoy

New Delhi: One month after the heinous Mumbai attacks, Pakistan’s hand of sympathy has turned into a fist, pumping war cries.

With tension mounting across the Indo-Pak border, Pakistan government is now accusing India of pushing it into war.

Reports say Islamabad is moving thousands of troops to vital points on the border and Line of Control with India, diverting its fighter jets away from action on its western border with Afghanistan, and cancelling leave for all military personnel.

Yet in an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN, Pakistan's High Commissioner to London Wajid Shamsul Hassan denied the actions were what New Delhi called "war hysteria".

"You are building up hysteria, not Pakistan. Pakistan has been playing cool. It’s not being drawn into controversy or any sort of tit-for-tat (politics),” Wajid Shamsul Hassan said.

But Indian officials say Pakistan is on the defensive because it is running out of room for diplomatic manoeuvre.

In the last 24 hours, statements from three key allies of Islamabad — Saudi Arabia, China and the US — all asking Pakistan to get tougher on terror groups on its soil, underscored the point.

The pressure is telling, leading to more denials from Pakistan.

"That’s what India has been successful at. It has been using coercive diplomacy to isolate Pakistan but it will not succeed. How can India say that we are not doing enough? If they give us evidence we will work on it,” Hassan added.

Saturday marks one year since Benazir Bhutto's assassination, yet despite vows to finish the terrorists who killed her and assurances given to India just a month ago, Islamabad government seems unwilling to keep its promises just yet.
