Pak General Elections to be held as scheduled

New Delhi: The Pakistan Government has decided to go ahead with the January 8 General Elelctions in the country in spite of the shocking assassination of the most prominent Opposition leader, Benazir Bhutto, on Thursday and a civil war-like situation across the country.

The interim Pakistan Cabinet, which met on Friday to review the situation hours before Benazir's scheduled funeral and decided that there will be no change in the election schedule.

"Pakistan's general elections to be held as scheduled on January 8," Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro said.

There were speculations about the possibility of deferring the general elections following Thursday grusome political murder, but the Pakistan Government has decided to go ahead with its plans.

While the Pakistan People's Party's reaction to the government's decision was not forthcoming immediately, another Opposition leader Nawaz Sharif reacted strongly, saying President Pervez Musharraf was hell-bent on destroying Pakistan.
