Pak will always be US ally: Kasuri

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Pakistan will remain a key US ally no matter which party wins the next US elections, says Pakistani Foreign Minister Khursheed Kasuri.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)of foreign ministers in Hamburg, Kasuri warned that the international community must not walk away from Afghanistan.

"Even if there is a change of policy in Iraq, and I'm not saying whether there is going to be one or not—that's for the US to decide. My own assessment is, and this is also based on the consensus reflected in the Baker-Hamilton report, that Afghanistan will remain important to the next administration,” he said.

Meanwhile, police fired water cannons and used batons in Hamburg to control the situation as ASEM got underway.

The ASEM comes ahead of the G8 in early June and demonstrators see it as an opportunity to highlight their concerns over globalisation.

The summit of 43 nations from Asia and Europe is debating issues ranging from nuclear proliferation and terrorism to climate change and Iraq.

India is attending the conference for the first time with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee leading the Indian delegation.
