Pak misusing US weapons for Indian targets

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: For years now, India has been telling the US that Pakistan is misusing military aid given to it. India has also been trying to convince the western allies of Pakistan that more often than not, the weapons acquired through that aid are used against India.

Now, a US media report seemingly confirms that Pakistani missiles are targeting not the Taliban but India instead.

The alarm bells were sounded not from India, but from the US. America has accused Pakistan of illegally modifying the Harpoon missile and also accused of modifying American-made P-3C aircraft for land-attack missions.

At a time when it's being pushed to fight the Taliban, Islamabad has been plotting to strike at India the American-made Harpoon missile.

  • The harpoon is an all-weather, over the horizon anti-ship missile with a range of up to 300 km.
  • It can be launched from coastal batteries on land, fixed wing aircraft, from ships and even submarines.
  • The US says Pakistan has modified the anti-ship missile to pick land targets. But the greater threat is that it is possible to arm the Harpoons with small nuclear weapons.
  • The US has also accused Pakistan of modifying American-made P-3C aircraft for land-attack missions.

The timing couldn't have been worse for Pakistan. The US administration is in the process of seeking sanctions from the Congress for a $7.5 billion aid to Pakistan over the next five years. Pakistani officials deny the charges, and allege sabotage.

Pakistani envoy to UK, Wajid Shamsul Hasan spoke to CNN-IBN on phone from London.

Hasan said, "India has nothing to worry about anything from Pakistan. Pakistan is a very peaceful neighbour. After the 1972 war, we signed the Shimla agreement with India and ever since that we have had no formal war with India as such. We are a democratic government and democracies do not go to war for nothing."

But with Pakistan's nuclear arsenal expanding faster than any other nation, and Pakistan developing weapons technology that has nothing to with fighting insurgency, there's growing mistrust in the US against this reluctant ally in the war against terrorism.
