Pak assemblies to know poll results today

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Pakistan's Election Commission is meeting on Saturday to notify the results of the February 18 polls for the National and Provincial Assemblies.

The Chief Election Commissioner, (Retd) Justice Qazi Muhammad Farooq has called the meeting as the Constitutional deadline to notify the results ends on March 3.

The notification will set the stage for formation of a historic coalition government led by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and backed by Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League, the Awami National Party and several independents.

The coalition is just short of the two-thirds majority needed to impeach President Musharraf.

Meanwhile, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has ruled himself out as a candidate for the post of Pakistan's president.

He was responding to speculation that he would replace Musharraf as part of a deal between the PPP and his party.

Nawaz also reiterated that his party would join the new government only if President Musharraf quits office. However, he added that they had no hesitation in fully backing the new government at the centre.

"We have assured PPP co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari of our full cooperation, whether the PML-N becomes part of the government or not," Nawaz told ARY Oneworld news channel.

"We will only become part of government when Musharraf quits the office of president," he added.
