New Delhi: Pakistani Law Minister Farooq Naek met Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail.

Naek said he will review the death sentence given to Sarabjit. According to Naek, under article 45 of Pakistan's Constitution, a pardon can be granted to Sarabjit by the President of Pakistan.

"We've got to study the file, what is his case, what exactly has happened and everything will be decided at the highest level. Then a report will be prepared. Let us not jump. It'll be premature to take any decision at this stage," Naek said.

Sarabjit was to be initially hanged on April 1, but his execution was deferred by former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf.

Zardari is said to be reviewing the status.

India has requested that Sarabjit be given clemency. He has been on death row since 1990 on terror charges. There seems to be fresh hope now for the 42-year-old prisoner on the death row.

The case of Sarabjit, who was convicted for his alleged involvement in four bomb attacks in Punjab province in 1990, is being reviewed on humanitarian grounds. Sarabjit's family has maintained he's innocent.
