New Delhi: He has languished in a jail in Pakistan for 35 years, forsaken by his country, almost forgotten by his family. However on Monday evening, Kashmir Singh has a new lease of life and is a free man.

Pakistani authorities finally released him from prison. Ever since the news broke that President Pervez Musharraf has pardoned him, his friends and family in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, have been celebrating.

Kashmir Singh's wife, Paramjit Kaur says, "It is a very important day for me. We are thankful to God that he is back. Life has been full of sorrow. I have laboured to take care of my children and have faced many troubles."

After his release from the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore, Kashmir Singh will be taken to Nankana Saheb and will then cross the border with Pakistan's caretaker Human Rights Minister, Ansar Burni.

Burni was instrumental in securing Singh's pardon and he will most likely be home by Tuesday.

Long years of solitary confinement have left Singh a mental wreck. But his family say they can't wait to see him again.

His daughter-in-law, Sukhvinder Kaur says, "He has grandchildren now. Three generations of his family are looking forward to his return. His grandchildren can't wait to see him."

Arrested and sentenced in 1973 for espionage in Rawalpindi, Kashmir Singh hasn't seen his native land for three long decades. For him, this will be a bitter sweet return to a life he had left as a young man.
