Indian prisoner Sarabjit's family seeks help

CNN-IBN

Mumbai: The family of Sarabjit Singh, the Indian prisoner on death row in Pakistan is trying to garner public support across the country for his mercy petition. Sarabjit’s plea for clemency was quashed once by the Pakistan Supreme Court.

Sarabjit Singh was sentenced to death for his alleged role in the Lahore bombings of 1990 and has spent the last 19 years in a Pakistani jail.

Sarabjit's only hope now is if Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari decides to grant him a pardon in the case.

Sarabjit's sister and his daughter were in Mumbai to meet the city's Sikh community, the minorities’ commission and veteran film-maker Mahesh Bhatt.

"I am sure that I will get the robust support of all the people of Hindustan and its media to fight for the release of an innocent Indian jailed abroad. I hope people come forth and take part in huge protests in the streets so the two governments (of India and Pakistan) are forced to talk out the Sarabjit matter," said Sarabjit's sister.

"We request people to please appeal to Zardariji and send emails in my father's support," said the daughter.

The family of Sarbjit and its group of supporters plan to go to the Wagah border on August 14 as symbolic gesture to appeal for clemency.
