Islamabad: A senior Pakistani journalist on Monday escaped a bid on his life as an improvised explosive device was found planted under his car in Islamabad. Geo News reported that Hamid Mir had gone to a market in his car and after returning home, the driver spotted a suspicious bag under his car.

The bomb disposal squad was immediately called in to remove the bag. The bomb, hidden in a black bag and packed into a tin, contained a locally made explosive, a detonator and a battery, the channel reported. It aired footage of a member of the bomb disposal squad, clad in protective clothing, defusing the bomb.

No group claimed responsibility for the attempt on the life of Mir, who hosts a night-time talk show on Geo News.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that the government will probe the incident. "All links will have to be examined properly. We have to fight terrorism. I am with Hamid Mir. I cannot give a time frame for the inquiry but we will nab the culprit."
