New Delhi: Former cricketer and now President of the Tehreek-e-Insaaf party in Pakistan Imran Khan has said that restoration of the judiciary should be of high priority for the next government in Pakistan, even if it means giving Asif Ali Zardari an amnesty from the corruption cases against him.
Speaking exclusively to Karan Thapar on CNN-IBN’s Devil’s Advocate, Imran Khan said he ‘completely’ agrees with his former wife Jemima Khan's contention that Pakistan has been plagued by dynastic politics.
"I agree with her completely that democracy was meant to finish dynastic rule, in other words, monarchy. In the subcontinent, we have been plagued by this, that just because someone has a blood relationship, it entitles them to inherit power," he said.
Asked if he accepted Jemima's view on Bhutto being a "Kleptocrat in a Hermes scarf" and that she was an incompetent prime minister who brazenly looted the treasury, Khan said, "That's Jemima's article, she writes regular columns. I think you should interview her for that."
Excerpts from the interview.
Imran Khan: For the sake of Pakistan we could give him some amnesty or something from corruption cases, so he can get along with governance.
Karan Thapar: Are you formally suggesting that in the interest of Pakistan an amnesty be given to Zardari so that he doesn't need to worry about the impact on himself of restoring the Judiciary?
Imran Khan: Well you know it's a personal view, not my party's view, but I am all for this. I think... we cannot just because people are scared of there corruption cases, we cannot NOT have an independent justice system.
Karan Thapar: Let me put it like this, you've said it's your personal view, not your party's view, would you be willing to stand up and defend this view in public?
Imran Khan: I think in the interest of Pakistan - there's too much at stake for our country, so we want the Judiciary back even if it means an amnesty, yes.
