Palin may hit McCain prospects says poll

Cincinnati: It seems like the honeymoon is over for Sarah Palin. New polls suggest a key group of voters is starting to sour on John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin and that's potentially bad news for the ticket.

Not many would take John McCain's statement about his running mate very seriously now.

The Republican presidential nominee may in the past made statements like, "I'm so proud of the enthusiasm that Sarah Palin sparked across this country."

But what started as pure praise for his running mate has morphed into a staunch defence. McCain is going to find it an increasingly tough task to swing voters, especially independent female voters McCain aides had hoped she would appeal to, like Susan McGraw.

"I don't think she's ready for the big boys should something happen to McCain," said Susan who is an independent voter.

President of Pew Research Centre in Cincinnati, Ohio Andrew Kohut said said that a rhetoric like that has backfired for McCain.

"Obviously she's been front and center in going after Obama, and I think it's hurt her," said Kohut.

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll suggests worry about Palin's experience is really dragging McCain down. But Palin remains wildly popular with the party's base. Republican leaders in GOP strongholds like Hamilton county insist she's still a plus.

Ohio GOP Chairperson Mark Triantafilou said, "When people find out that she's coming to this region, our phones ring like crazy."

It is a tradeoff that some pollsters and even some Republicans say could prove too costly. It may be true that McCain needs his own Republican base and Palin unquestionably helps a lot. But to win, he needs suburbs and independents. Evidence is mounting in those groups that Palin hurts McCain's prospects.
