Karnal: Panchayat sends baby to another village

CNN-IBN

Karnal (Haryana): There is no end to the trauma of parents whose child was snatched away by a panchayat in Karnal, all because they were of the same gotra.

The child has been sent off by the Khatledi village Panchayat to a third-party somewhere else in Punjab.

Kavita and Pawan, the parents of the child were asked to pay up a fine of Rs 65,000 and forego their child.

Pawan has now approached a social organisation in Karnal for help.

Despite a huge public outcry, the panchayat continues to maintain that it will not allow the couple to live together but that the baby will be cared for.

Pawan and Kavita belong to the same Valmiki gotra. Since the panchayat was against their alliance, the couple had fled to Mumbai after marriage.

One year later when they returned, Kavita was in the family way. This made the village thekedars furious. Not only did they snatch the baby away, they threatened Pawans's family.
