Pandas in China still under earthquake shock

Wolong : The earthquake which hit Sichuan, China this May has not just affected human lives but it has also caused many other disruptions and destructions. Panda's at the Wolong Panda Protection Centre are now reeling under post-traumatic stress while the Centre is trying to rebuild itself.

Life for one-year-old Lingling at the Wolong Panda Protection Centre, situated in the earthquake-hit Sichuan province in China, is not the same now.

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake that hit the province two months ago left the pandas badly traumatised by the tremor and the Centre vulnerable to aftershocks.

While Linling and six other one-year-old pandas stayed on, the rest were transferred to other bases. Now, officials are trying to rebuild the Centre and reunite the pandas.

"We must rebuild the Panda Protection Centre and this is the best way to protect the panda. We will try to rebuild the China Panda Protection Centre and hopefully we can resend the pandas back to Wolong in three years. This our goal,” said Director of China Research and Conservation Centre for the Giant Panda, Zhang Hemin.

The Wolong reserve is at the heart of China's effort to use captive breeding and artificial insemination to save the giant panda but the earthquake uprooted its research.

"The massive earthquake has badly affected our breeding programme for giant pandas. The Panda Protection Centre in Wolong was totally destroyed and it is not usable anymore,” Hemin added.

The reserve is running short of funds these days so there are possibilities that the rebuilding of the reserve takes a bit longer.
