Panel moots making CBI like American FBI

New Delhi: Following the debate on whether CBI should probe into Scarlette Keeling murder case, a Parliamentary Standing Committee has asked the government to free the CBI from political interference and give it powers to prosecute and investigate crimes suo moto.

“Give CBI suo moto powers,” says Chairman, Parliament Panel, Dr EMS Natchiappan.

If a parliamentary standing committee recommendation is admitted, there is a strong chance that Scarlette's murder case will be resolved and there could be trouble ahead for state governments opposing CBI probes.

The committee says the CBI should be given the powers to investigate crimes such as terrorism or in issues where two or more states are involved like the FBI in the USA.

The government thinks that the demand for CBI probe in Scarlette’s murder is the latest political stick being used by the opposition.

Goa CM Digambar Kamat has said that there is no need for CBI enquiry in Scarlette murder case. “The Goa police is capable enough to probe the case,” Kamat said.

It seems it would be easy to accept the Natchiappan committee recommendations for issues such as terrorism, however it is in investigating issues such as DG Vanzara fake encounters or the Nithari murders that the problem may arise.

There is no unanimity though amongst political parties on the issue. “We will have to study the report first,” says Politburo Member, Brinda Karat.

“More powers to VBI would mean more corruption,” says BJP Leader, M Venkaiah Naidu.

However, there are states including Punjab, Orissa and Himachal that have already come around to the idea of giving federal powers to the CBI.
