Bangalore: A false report on a local Kannada channel which claimed that many children in Bangalore had died after taking pulse polio drops led to widespread panic and chaos in the city.
Angry parents also stoned ambulances of the government-run Bowring Hospital as they rushed to get their children checked.
The state health department denied any deaths but it failed to convince parents and relatives, which led to hospitals being overcrowded and roads being blocked.
Police had to resort to public address systems to inform angry and worried parents but it took authorities many hours to calm them down and bring
The local channel had reported that there were at least 100 deaths after polio drops were administered to children
"A local Kannada channel flashed the news and it soon news spread. SMS was also used to spread the rumour. Everybody had come out on the road thinking that there is something wrong with this pulse polio vaccine. There has not even been a single sickness in the entire Karnataka," BK Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Bangalore, said.
