Paralysed techie reunites with family after 8 years

New Delhi: It was an emotional moment for Vidyavati, who met her software engineer son Manjunath Kalpani at the Capital’s Safdarjung Hospital on Sunday, eight years after he went to the US only to return paralysed neck down.

Vidyavati said that she was happy to see her son. “I hope Manjunath gets the best treatment,” she said after meeting her son.

The 27-year-old met with a car accident in the US six years ago. The accident severely damaged his spine and rendered him immobile.

As his parents could not afford his treatment, Manjunath stood virtually abandoned by them for eight long years.

“We were not in a position to finance his treatment. He was getting treated in the US,” Manjunath’s mother Vidyavati, who is based in Koppal, Karnataka, was quoted as saying to a news agency.

Manjunath’s family have now requested the Karnataka government and the Central Government to take care of his treatment expenses.

Manjunath was brought to Delhi on March 5 in an air ambulance from Northside Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, to the Palam airport, from where he was taken to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital. He returned to India after his visa in the US expired.

Manjunath's brother works in a cooperative society and his father is a farmer in Karnataka while his mother Vidyavati is a housewife.
