New Delhi: It was hailed as a victory just a couple of months ago when five HIV positive children were re-admitted to a school at Pampady in Kottayam district of Kerala. But the issue is back in focus again.
The children were forced to leave school again as parents of other students refused to let their children study with them. With the government threatening to derecognise the school, it’s a catch-22 situation for the school authorities.
“It’s a very difficult situation as parents are not agreeing at any cost. But we are very hopeful of finding a solution to this issue. We will again talk to the parents in the next coming days and try our best to make them agree to this,” says member of the school management, Paulose Mar Pakanious Metrapolita.
The school management has so far failed to convince the parents.
“We will not allow our kids to study here at any cost as long as the HIV+ kids are studying here. We are not adverse to those kids studying here. But then we will not send our children here,” says a parent, M R Raju.
Call it lack of awareness or plain fear, the parents have serious apprehensions about allowing their children to share most of their day with HIV affected ones. Whatever end result this debate may have, it already seems to have killed sensitivity in Pampady.
