Teens shocked after Arushi 'killer' unveiled

New Delhi: Parents and children are having a tough time coming to terms with the nature of this tragedy. What's most disturbing is that the kind of people who were allegedly involved in this crime do not belong to the underbelly of society, but are respectable people.

Thirteen-year-old Gayatri's mother says that there are a lot more questions that need answering. "Even if the father was having an affair, that's not enough reason to kill a daughter," says she.

For Gayatri, Arushi wasn't just an image from a newspaper. They were friends from their dance class. Gayatri couldn't sleep the night after news broke out that it was Arushi's father who had killed his daughter.

"I was praying to God that they could find the murderer because the father would never kill his only child. He would punish yes, but not kill."

Gayatri's mother says her daughter still can't believe the fact that a father would kill his only child. "Gayatri has been saying that if the police has arrested the father, they won't investigate further and so they will not be able to find the real killer."

Other parents with kids in the same age group are facing the same difficult questions, though some have it easier than others.

Eleven-year-old Harris has been hooked onto the news for the last five days trying to solve the Arushi murder mystery at his own level.

He wonders how Arushi's mother did not know about the murder, whether she had been sedated and also how a father could do what he did.

Meanwhile, Harris' father, Zeeshan Khan, says that the incident didn't shock his child too much.

"He has been very curious. When he watches me reading the newspaper, he doesn't see this as something he should be too concerned about and I am happy about," says Khan.

Caught between too many questions, these parents can't help but give advice to their children.

While Gayatri's mother thinks her daughter needs to learn self-defence, go back to her taekwondo classes and learn to take care of herself, Zeeshan Khan tells his child that if you have made a mistake, it is best to come out in the open and confess — deal with problems in the correct way.
