New Delhi: For the last one week Parliament has been in a state of chaos and total confusion. Reason – the Government's refusal to set up any joint parliamentary committee to look into the nuclear deal.

Now just a day after the Government announced a 15-member committee, it finally had to agree to a parliamentary debate.

“We would like to have a debate tomorrow,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the Indo-US nuclear deal as historic. But the kind of criticism, which has been levelled against him has ended up only as embarrassment for the UPA Government.

So, when the debate kicks off on Thursday, the Government's managers would be watching the situation closely.

The Left's insistence on branding the deal as a compromise on India's sovereignty and the UNPA's moves of attaching the anti-minority tag to the deal will only add to the Government's woes.

The BJP's reluctance to completely join hands with the Left is perhaps the only relief for the UPA but once the debate begins on Thursday the Government is in for severe all round criticism.

“The nuclear deal must be vetted in Parliament. It’s not just the business of the ruling bench,” BJP leader L K Advani said.

The one man who would be brooding the most is the Prime Minister. Known for his soft nature, Singh perhaps will have to pay a heavy price for his decision to dare the Left.
