Katra (Jammu): A birthday song, heaps of gifts and a village feast. Reason? Ganga Ram turns 25.
You may be forgiven for thinking that Ganga Ram is the heir apparent of the village panchayat or the son of a village biggie. After all, it’s not everyday that an entire village assembles to celebrate the birthday of their oldest parrot.
But in the village Bawa Jeeto near Katra district in Jammu, it was not just a time to celebrate with the tutor and the extended family of the parrot, the occasion also gave villagers elders a reason to sound profound.
“He just turned 25. So we decided to celebrate today. If people start loving birds and animals this world, will be a better place,” says the village sarpanch (panchayat head), Krishan Lal.
The birthday party had an expenditure of over Rs 5,000 and a guest list over 250 people, with the kids of the village showering their favourite pet with biscuits and fruits.
But beyond all the celebration and gaiety, Ganga Ram's true gift, the gift of freedom, was far from being close.
The bird caged for the last 25 years, was clearly not being a part of the celebrations. That's probably why it refused the birthday cake and opted for red chillies instead!
