Parsis celebrate Navroz across India

Mumbai: The Parsis celebrated Navroz, the Parsi New Year on Sunday.

Navroz is the first day of the first month of the Zoroastrian year. And despite their dwindling number, there was excitement in the whole of Mumbai.

"The TATA's, the Godrej's what would India do without these stalwarts of Parsis? They conserve their homes, their furniture’s, their cars, their animals, plant and trees around them. That's why wherever you have a Parsi around you have so much greenery. We are blessed to we have the Parsi community in our midst," a resident of Parsi colony Rajeev Sethi says.

The Parsi community in India is one of those few communities that have, though with difficulty managed to maintain their identity.

"The new year spells things that are new and shining. It means starting things fresh and," actor, Boman Irani says.

Members of the community say spending some quality time along with ones family over sumptuous food is central to Navroz.

"The festival is all about being Parsi, spending time with the family, eating sumptuous food and remembering that we are Parsis," a student Danish Irani says.

And like any other Indian festival, food is an important part of this festival too.

"Patrani macchi, saali boti and chicken farcha are my personal favorite. There is also pulao dals. But the most important dish really is the time with the family," Boman Irani says.
