Nashik: Elections are around the corner and so it's time for political parties to come out and build alliances. But in Maharahstra they are building alliances of a more personal kind.
Mass marriages have become the favoured method of wooing votes. The Shiv Sena recently organised the marriage of 150 couples in Nashik.
Shiv Sena's Dada Bhuse says, "People take loans for weddings, fall into debt and then even commit suicides. This is a better way."
Not to be outdone the NCP tried to make a bigger impression by helping 1,500 couples tie the knot.
NCP leader Anil Chowghule says, "In Maharashtra, farmers are committing suicide after taking loans from money lenders. They take these loans to get their children married, so mass marriages are a good initiative."
Political parties in the state say they are promoting communal harmony by helping conduct inter-religious marriages. But the billion dollar question is whether these newly-weds cast the ballot in favour of their benefactors.
