New Delhi: While India celebrates its 61st year of Independence, there is a docu-filmmaker who chooses to put the spotlight on the partition with his movie Chitti Hatia. But this time it's all in a bid to spread bonhomie.
It has been more than 60 years since the partition but it still continues to fascinate filmmakers. And Sharad Sharma is one such documentary filmmaker.
A cartoonist by profession, Sharad decided to tell the story of Delhi-based Bittu Sondhi and his father's dying wish to go across the border one last time, to his first home
“It is important to tell the stories of partition,” says Sharad.
It all started in 2007, when Sharad accompanied Bittu to Pakistan to trace down Sondhi's roots in Chitti Hatia, Rawalpindi. It was Bittu's father's last wish to visit his house in Chitti Hatia, which he deserted when he was 13-year-old to flee to India in 1947.
Chitti Hatia is about partition but not about the agony of partition.
Instead it focuses on the camaraderie between the common people of both the countries.
“People there have given me a lot of love,” says Bittu Sondhi.
Sharad shot the film with a handycam and edited it along with some friends at home.
Chitti Hatia will be screened at Pakistan's Kara Film Festival in November this year in a bid to spread the message of peace and brotherhood in these troubled times when Indo-Pak relations are again going through a strained phase.
