Lucknow: UP Chief Minister Mayawati’s assets have increased by 400 per cent in three years and for this she gives all the credit to her BSP workers.
“BSP workers who used to send the money to the party later started money directly to me. They thought I had no money and gave me freedom to use it the way I wanted to,” she says.
In her declaration filed before the Election Commission, Mayawati has declared assets worth Rs 52 crore. These include a property on Delhi’s Sardar Patel Road, jewelry worth Rs 50 lakh, 380 carat diamonds and a 18.5-kg silver dinner set costing more than a lakh.
Mayawati says she earned the wealth because of her party workers. "When BJP government set the CBI after me it was the party workers who helped me out,” she says.
BJP leader Sushma Swaraj rebutted by saying: "Thanks to Maya, if she thinks that we are making her rich all the best."
Her opponents are wondering whether there is any connection between the disproportionate assets case and the kind of disclosures she has made in her affidavit. While the UP governor had refused to give his sanction for prosecuting her citing lack of evidence, Mayawati’s rivals still allege her wealth is illegal.
