New Delhi: Student union elections in the country need a major overhaul. A high level report prepared on university elections has recommended the clean up of student union polls.
The celebration, the jazz and the extravagance from the university elections are all set to go.
At least that's what the Lynghdo committee on student union polls wants. They also want a check on how much money is being spent and where.
The committee has also recommended that:
- Students older than 26 should not be allowed to contest elections.
- Those studying to get a third degree irrespective of the age should also be barred.
- Big political parties will be kept out of university campuses. So political leaders cannot campaign for candidates, which has been a regular feature in student elections so far.
- So regulars like Arun Jaitley and Sitaram Yechury will now be kept away form the campus.
But, not everybody agree with the report though.
"What's the big deal in that? The idea is to expose them to larger political campaigns and issues," says CMP leader, Sitaram Yechury.
The Lyngdoh Committee was formed on the directives of the Supreme Court to essentially clean up student politics.
Earlire this year, the Supreme Court had asked the committee to examine and consider all aspects of student elections.
The committee goes on to recommend that no Election Commission like body conduct polls in universities.
Big universities should have an indirect mode of elections. And most importantly, they are speaking of an expenditure limit of Rs 5000 per candidate.
"Rs 5000 per candidate is a very little money. We have contested elections before and this will have practical problems," says former NSUI president, Ashok Tanwar.
Over the years criminalisation of student politics has been a major concern.
And if the committee’s recommendations are implemented then perhaps campuses could be freed of the threat of violence that marks their annual calender.
