Ahmedabad: In February 2002, the Modys, a Parsi family’s 13-year-old son Azhar went missing in a mob frenzy when their house was attacked following the Godhra carnage.
Azhar’s mother, Rupa Mody recalls the incident. "They burnt my back. I have 13 stitches in my head. They had burnt my face too. We could hardly breathe as there was black smoke and tyres were burning. My daughter kept shouting, ‘Mamma utho mamma utho’."
There is no sign of him even after five years, but the family still lives in hope.
"I have made all possible efforts to find him. Today also, when I have a day off I go looking for him. I have immense hope. My heart doesn't believe that my son isn’t there,” says Azhar’s father Dara Mody weeping.
"Our son is not with us today. There's not a single festival including rakshabandhan and our own festival, when we don't think about Azhar. I spent 10 hours running with my children. It was the most difficult time. And its worse today, five years later,” adds Rupa.
Director Rahul Dholakia inspired by their ordeal made a film Parzania, which is all set to release in theatres on January 26.
"As a filmmaker, I felt responsible. I thought that if I didn't do anything about it, I would be equally responsible for the crime that was committed. It was a guilt trip. The only thing that I could do was tell the story of the family,” says Dholakia.
"Gujaratis should watch this film. My son went missing here. Wherever he is, maybe his mind is upset. I just hope he comes home, that’s all I pray for,” adds Rupa.
