New Delhi: Parzania, the much-talked about and critically acclaimed film by Rahul Dholakia, has been stuck with censor board for a long time but now it is finally releasing on January 26.
The film is based on the life of Dholakia's close friend Dara Modi, who lost his son Azar during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
In the Capital to promote the film along with Parzania's lead actors Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika, Dholakia was overwhelmed and struck an emotional chord.
“Dara is still searching for Azar with a picture of his, asking everyone if somebody has seen him. Why should this happen to anyone?” Dholakia asked.
The film also had difficulty attracting distributors because of its sensitive storyline.
So producer-director Dholakia himself took on distributing the film in many territories. Meanwhile, both actors, Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika, had absolutely no apprehensions about the film. They felt it was a story that had to be told.
“It’s funny that nobody thought about making a film on Godhra even after five years. I guess, we are like that only. For 35 years nobody thought about making a film on Gandhi. Some Angrez (British) had to do it,” said Naseeruddin Shah.
“Rahul has written the story in a very sensitive way. He never wanted to sensationalise anything,” explained Sarika.
Rumour has it that the film is likely to bag two national awards. But awards or no awards, Dholakia is happy that it's finally seeing the light of the day. So much so he is wearing the film on his sleeve, literally.
“It’s a band that says defeat hate and celebrate unity. And on the other side it’s Parzania with tricolour. Since the film is releasing on January 26, we thought it would be nice if everyone wears the kind of band on that day,” said Dholakia.
Dara Modi and family too, will be seeing the film for the first time on that day but for them, the struggle is hardly over. Azar is still missing.
