New Delhi: We know that smoking is bad for health, and so is passive smoking. A new study by Stanford University also claims that even a brief exposure to outdoor second hand tobacco smoke poses greater health risks than indoor passive smoking.
Says chest physician, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Dr P P Bose, "The already present pollutants in the air along with the toxic pollutants produced during smoking makes it doubly worse. It is a very bad combination.”
The culprit is PM 2.5, an air borne pollutant that is produced by lit cigarettes
PM 2.5 consists of microscopic a particle that is about 30 times narrower than a human hair. It penetrates deep inside the lungs so repeated outdoor passive smoking can seriously damage your health.
You could get asthma attacks, chronic bronchitis and even irregular heartbeat. Sometimes it can even lead to premature death and non-fatal heart attacks.
"Steam and gargles can help a but if you are exposed but in case of repeated exposure it won’t help,” says Dr Bose.
So next time you spot a smoker remember that passive smoking, indoors or outside, is unhealthy.
