Jaipur: Pastor Walter Masih was brutally assaulted allegedly by VHP workers in Jaipur on April 29 last year. A year later, he is making desperate pleas for justice because the BJP government in Rajasthan has refused prosecution of the 14 accused and closed investigations in the case.

“They (Rajasthan government) want to save their people but they were the attackers. We want justice, please help us,” Masih, who is a resident of Jaipur, said.

Meanwhile, civil rights groups are up in arms against the state government’s attitude.

“Just because the accused are from their clan, the government has refused the sanction. This is totally illegal,” an advocate with the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, Ajay Kumar Jain said.

The police had first filed a chargesheet against the 14 accused in August 2007. They later added new charges against the accused and sought the state government's sanction for prosecution. The government not just refused that but also asked the trial court to hold a previous chargesheet valid.

“It’s sad that just because he's a Christian so much undue importance is being given to this case. So many such challans have been presented against other people but nobody bothered to check,” Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said.

The BJP government's decision to refuse sanction of the prosecution may have sent out a clear message in the election year, but civil rights groups say they will come out on the streets to protest against the government's attempts to repeat a Gujarat in Rajasthan.
