Patiala: Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Ravinderpal Mangat was beaten to death by occupants of a truck in Patiala. Sources say the incident took place when the policeman tried to clear a road for VIP movement.

This led to an altercation with the truck occupants who then allegedly beat him to death. Mangat lost consciousness after the driver allegedly hit him with an iron rod, police said. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

The truck driver has been arrested. An investigation is on to ascertain the circumstances leading to the policeman's death. Reports say that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Reacting to the incident, Congress leader Gulchain Singh Charak said, "If the state government cannot handle the law and order, they must resign."
