NCP continues to shield Padamsinh Patil

New Delhi: A brazenly defiant Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is supporting its Osmanabad MP Padamsinh Patil, who was arrested in the Pawanraj Nimbalkar murder case, despite the mounting pressure from the opposition and the public. The party is firmly shielding Patil.

NCP leader DP Tripathi said that Patil is innocent until proven guilty in court.

And also that the party will wait for a court decision before initiating any action against him.

"Just on the basis of certain statements no one's personality should be maligned. The law should be allowed to take its own course without any hindrance. I don't think this will impact the assembly elections because we believe in the wisdom of the electorate and the people of Maharashtra," said Tripathi.

"He is our responsible and distinguished leader and till proven guilty by a court of law, he continues to be a honourable leader. And as such the party sides by him," he added.

There has been increasing pressure on the NCP to disassociate itself from Patil following his arrest. Many believe the incident could lead to losses in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly election.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned social activist Anna Hazare to record statements in connection with the murder of Nimbalkar. Hazare had carried out a campaign, which resulted in the case being handed over to the CBI.

The CBI will also question some officers of the Maharashtra Crime Branch, who initially probed the murder.
