New Delhi: Social activist Medha Patkar was detained along with other protesters for protesting in front of the Planning Commission and entering the Yojana Bhawan on Thursday.
The protestors were demanding an end to the privatisation of water resources, cancelling moves to inter-link rivers and a moratorium on big dams.
They were also protesting against the violence in Nandigram and demanding revoking of SEZ project.
As the protestors refused to back down, police intervened and arrested 60 of them.
Earlier Medha Patkar had said that the decision to put on hold the creation of SEZs was "a highly belated one" after the loss of so many lives at Nandigram.
"Such a decision on the SEZ should not have been delayed under any circumstance, but the state government has been callous in going ahead with the idea at the cost of innocent lives," Patkar had been quoted by news agency UNI as saying.
Patkar blamed West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya for the SEZ mess in the state, saying that he was the one responsible for the genocide in Nandigram.
At least 14 people died in clashes between villagers and police in Nandigram on March 14 . The administration was taken by surprise by the resistance offered by villagers after a gap of three months.
When police contingents tried to enter Nandigram, villagers resisted and reportedly started pelting stones and hurling crude bombs. The administrative authorities claimed that police started firing in retaliation.
The Home ministry is investigating the incident.
